On Thursday, DoorDash announced the launch of Ask DoorDash, a new artificial intelligence chatbot that allows users to order food and groceries using text prompts and photos. The feature represents the company’s latest push to integrate conversational AI into its consumer-facing application. By allowing users to search for items in their own words, the tool aims to simplify the ordering process. Instead of navigating multiple menus, users can interact with the chatbot using text prompts, share recipe links to find specific items, or describe their reservation needs.

The launch places DoorDash in direct competition with other delivery platforms that have recently integrated similar AI tools to make shopping more conversational. In February, competitor Uber Eats launched Cart Assistant, its AI-powered shopping feature. Similarly, Instacart has rolled out an AI shopping assistant designed for grocers to offer directly to their customers.

The Ask DoorDash chatbot is built to handle complex, conversational requests that traditional search engines struggle to process. For instance, users can ask the tool to suggest a filling dinner for a family of 4 or find a table for a date-night dinner around 8 PM. In explaining the utility of the new feature, DoorDash stated that “Traditional search works best when you know the exact restaurant or table you’re looking for,” adding that “Ask DoorDash is designed for the moments when you don’t.”

The chatbot is currently rolling out on iOS in select regions, where it is available for restaurant search, grocery shopping, and reservations. DoorDash plans to expand the feature to reach more users across the U.S. in the coming weeks.

Why it matters

DoorDash is integrating AI into its ordering process to allow for conversational, photo-based, and recipe-based shopping. The launch joins similar moves by competitors like Uber Eats and Instacart as delivery platforms race to make AI assistants a standard part of everyday life.
