Global music streaming service Deezer announced on Wednesday the launch of “Remix Lab,” a new in-app feature currently available in France. The tool, which can be found on select artists’ pages within the app, allows fans to remix songs with the explicit consent of the original artists and rights holders. Unlike competing services that rely on artificial intelligence for remixes, Deezer’s feature uses in-app tools to adjust tempo, add reverb, or make other changes. Crucially, the company states that artists receive payment for every stream of these remixed tracks. Currently, users in France can remix tracks from select French artists, including Céline Dion, Alain Souchon, Alonzo, Ronisia, Mosimann, Tiakola, and Zaho. Users can also sign up for contests hosted in the Deezer Club, with winners to be announced in early September.

The launch represents a strategic divergence from competitors like Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music, which have increasingly integrated AI-generated content. For instance, YouTube allows creators to remix tracks using AI tools, while Spotify recently partnered with Universal Music Group for AI-generated covers and remixes. Deezer has taken a firm stance against this trend. The platform recently introduced a tool to detect AI-generated tracks on other streaming services, and it actively removes AI-generated tracks from its own recommendations and editorial playlists. This new feature could signal that the AI invasion on streaming services is not the only future for the music industry.

Company leadership frames the tool as a way to deepen fan engagement while respecting the creative process. Head of product Pierre Trochu explained that the tool allows for complex adjustments, including changes to musical genres and styles. Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer, stated, “This remix tool perfectly embodies our vision of offering a product that enriches the listening experience for fans, by allowing them to participate in the creative process and create a deeper connection with their favorite music, directly in the Deezer app.” Lanternier added that the features are built with the full participation of artists to respect rights and maximize earnings for each track.

Why it matters

Deezer’s “Remix Lab” represents a strategic divergence from the AI-generated music trend adopted by competitors, potentially establishing a new model for artist compensation and fan engagement.
