Ineffable Intelligence raises $1.1 billion for human-data-free AI
Ineffable Intelligence, founded by former DeepMind researcher David Silver, raised $1.1 billion at a $5.1 billion valuation to develop AI that learns without human data.
Ineffable Intelligence, a British AI lab founded by former DeepMind researcher David Silver, has raised $1.1 billion in funding at a valuation of $5.1 billion. The company, which has fast-forwarded to what is known as pentacorn status—a term for companies valued at more than $5 billion—aims to create a superlearner capable of discovering knowledge and skills without relying on human data. According to the Ineffable Intelligence site, the system will leverage reinforcement learning to learn from experience. The company’s website outlines an ambitious vision, stating that if successful, the project will represent a scientific breakthrough of comparable magnitude to Darwin’s law of evolution by explaining and building all intelligence. Silver, who previously led the reinforcement learning team at Google-owned DeepMind before leaving to launch the venture, has committed his personal proceeds to philanthropy. According to Silver, “any money that I make from Ineffable will go to high-impact charities that save as many lives as possible.”
The funding round highlights the rise of coconut rounds—massive seed investments for AI ventures. The capital injection joins other large rounds for peer AI startups:
- Ineffable Intelligence: Raised $1.1 billion at a $5.1 billion valuation. The round was led by Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from Index Ventures, Google, Nvidia, the British Business Bank, and Sovereign AI (a U.K. state-backed fund for AI).
- AMI Labs: Raised $1.03 billion at a $3.5 billion pre-money valuation just last month.
- Recursive Superintelligence: Reportedly raised $500 million, with potential demand to stretch that funding to $1 billion.
The participation of both venture capital firms and state-backed entities reflects the strategic importance of the sector. The round’s lead investors, Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners, were joined by participant investors including Index Ventures, Google, and Nvidia, alongside the British Business Bank and Sovereign AI. This mix of private and public capital underscores London’s growing status as an AI hub. The U.K. capital’s momentum is further highlighted by activity from U.S. entities; Project Prometheus, an AI lab, is reportedly in talks to secure office space close to Google’s AI hub. This concentration of activity traces back to Google’s acquisition of DeepMind in 2014, which helped establish the city’s technical ecosystem.
Why it matters
Ineffable Intelligence’s massive funding highlights the growing trend of coconut rounds for AI ventures led by star researchers, signaling a shift toward models that aim to bypass human data dependency.
