Apple transforms Siri into a conversational AI chatbot
Apple unveiled an overhauled, AI-powered Siri at WWDC 2026, transforming the assistant into a conversational chatbot to compete with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
On Monday, Apple officially unveiled its overhauled AI-powered assistant at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, WWDC 2026. This launch marks a major strategic shift for Siri, which has functioned primarily as a voice assistant since its inception. Apple is now transforming Siri into a full-fledged conversational AI chatbot, positioning the assistant to compete directly with established generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
The updated assistant is designed to be highly context-aware, drawing on current world knowledge to ground its answers to user questions. It can also access information directly on a user’s device and respond based on what is currently displayed on their screen. For text-based tasks, Apple is introducing a “Write with Siri” option, which allows users to get help writing and drafting text within the Mail and Messages apps. This feature can reflect how a user usually communicates, tailoring drafts to match the tone used with specific colleagues or friends. Beyond text, Siri features a brand-new voice experience that supports a customized pace and expressivity. Additionally, Apple has updated its system-wide dictation feature, delivering a boost in accuracy to make capturing spelling, punctuation, and capitalization more precise.
To support these new capabilities, the assistant has been redesigned to integrate more deeply across Apple’s hardware and software ecosystem. On modern iPhones, Siri will now live in the Dynamic Island—the interactive UI area at the top of modern iPhone screens. Instead of the traditional glowing screen animation, the updated assistant utilizes a new animation within this area when triggered. For desktop users, Apple is integrating the assistant into Spotlight, the system-wide search feature on macOS, allowing users to access Siri’s capabilities from anywhere on their computers. On watchOS, users will be able to ask questions and take action directly from their wearable devices, ensuring a consistent conversational experience across multiple form factors.
This major overhaul arrives two years after Apple initially promised but failed to launch a smarter version of Siri. The company confirmed that the new Siri AI revamp will be available in beta later this year, allowing users to test the conversational features before a wider public release.
Why it matters
This update represents a major pivot for Apple, transforming Siri from a voice assistant into a conversational AI chatbot. By integrating these capabilities across its ecosystem, Apple is positioning itself to compete directly with established AI platforms.
