Apple on Monday unveiled the iPhone 17e, a new budget-friendly smartphone retailing for $599. The device, which is scheduled to become available starting March 11, is powered by the A19 chip and includes support for Apple Intelligence, Apple’s artificial intelligence platform. This launch marks a shift in the company’s strategy for its entry-level hardware, bringing its AI capabilities to a lower price point. For storage, the base model of the smartphone comes equipped with 256 GB of storage, which Apple asserts is twice the entry-level storage offered in the previous generation.

The smartphone introduces several hardware upgrades over its predecessor, including integrated support for MagSafe and Qi2, which are wireless charging standards. The technical specifications of the iPhone 17e include the following features:

  • Wireless Charging: Support for MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging standards, which enable wireless charging speeds of up to 15W.
  • Cellular Modem: The integration of the new C1X cellular modem. The company states that this modem is up to twice as fast as the C1 modem found in the iPhone 16e, while consuming 30% less energy.
  • Camera System: A 48-megapixel camera, which utilizes the same camera sensor found on the iPhone 16e. The device’s Fusion camera enables an optical-quality 2x Telephoto zoom.
  • Video and Audio: Video recording capabilities in 4K with Dolby Vision up to 60 fps. The smartphone also records video in Spatial Audio, allowing for immersive listening with compatible accessories such as AirPods or the Apple Vision Pro.

Durability and environmental sustainability are central focuses for the new model. The iPhone 17e features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display protected by Ceramic Shield 2, a material that is said to offer thrice the scratch resistance of the previous generation. The smartphone also carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. On the environmental front, the device is manufactured with 30% recycled content, which includes 85% recycled aluminum in the enclosure and 100% recycled cobalt in the battery. For safety and emergency situations, the iPhone 17e supports Emergency SOS via satellite, Roadside Assistance, and Find My services.

Why it matters

Apple is pushing its AI platform down-market, signaling that Apple Intelligence is becoming a standard feature across its hardware portfolio rather than a premium-only differentiator.
