Apple sets November 2026 deadline for Patreon subscription billing

Apple is mandating that creator platform Patreon transition all of its creators to Apple’s in-app purchase system—the tech giant’s proprietary billing system—for subscription billing by November 1, 2026. The new mandate impacts only 4% of creators who are still using Patreon’s legacy billing models, which refer to older billing models used by creators on the platform, forcing a change for this remaining group.

The new timeline follows a period of shifting guidelines and confusion. Apple originally announced its mandate around subscription billing changes in 2024, initially requiring Patreon to migrate creators to its in-app purchase system by November 2025. Patreon had previously stated it would switch creators to subscription billing in November 2024. However, in May 2025, the platform took advantage of loosened App Store guidelines. These guidelines had been loosened following the U.S. court ruling in Epic v. Apple. This allowed Patreon to pause the transition for its creators, a decision that Patreon notes may have added to the confusion now that Apple is reimposing the transition deadline for November 1, 2026.

Patreon has publicly expressed its opposition to the mandate, stating that it disagrees with Apple’s decision. The platform has expressed strong disagreement with the mandate, claiming that Apple has declined multiple tools and features it proposed to allow a smoother transition on creators’ own timelines. In its public response, the company highlighted Apple’s lack of consistency around its changing terms, while clearly bristling at the idea that the tech giant should have a say in how creators run their businesses.

According to creator platform Patreon, the company stated: “Creators need consistency and clarity in order to build healthy, long-term businesses. Instead, creators using legacy billing will now have to endure the whiplash of another policy reversal — the third such change from Apple in the past 18 months. Over the years, we have proposed multiple tools and features to Apple that we could’ve built to allow creators using legacy billing to transition on their own timelines, with more support added in. Unfortunately, Apple has continually declined them”
