Apple announced a slate of new Apple Intelligence updates across its applications at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2026). The announcement introduces a series of features designed to integrate artificial intelligence directly into the operating system level of its devices. These updates span several core applications, including Safari, Messages, Calendar, the Phone app, Image Playground, and Photos, marking a deeper integration of context-aware tools into daily user workflows.

To improve usability, Apple is organizing these updates across its core applications:

  • Safari: The web browser is receiving AI-powered tab management that automatically groups tabs by topic. It can also suggest and add related tabs to an existing group. Additionally, Safari is receiving a page monitoring feature that notifies users when it detects changes on a page, which can be used for tracking time-sensitive information. Apple also stated that Safari can create a custom extension using text prompts to modify a web page, a capability that previously required a developer.
  • Phone App: The calling application is receiving context-aware data pulling capabilities. Apple stated that the Phone app can now pull context from other applications, such as Mail and Messages, mid-call. For example, if a user is on a call with an airline, the application can surface flight details from their email in real time.
  • Messages and Calendar: Messages is receiving AI-powered reply suggestions and a new capability to surface photos based on a text description, allowing users to find specific images without manual scrolling. In Calendar, users can now use natural language to create events by typing in details such as the people involved and the scheduled time.
  • Image Playground and Photos: Image Playground is receiving natural-language editing tools and a new model capable of generating photorealistic images. Users can select and edit individual objects, adjust image dimensions, and generate wallpapers or contact posters. Photos is receiving cleanup tools with improved infill and object removal, alongside a spatial reframing tool that allows users to reposition subjects within a frame.

These updates position Apple directly against competitors like Google, which offers a similar feature called Magic Cue (Google’s AI feature). The ability to pull real-time context across different applications suggests that the AI assistant wars are increasingly being fought at the operating system level, where deep integration with personal data serves as a key differentiator.

For developers, Apple is opening up its image generation capabilities through a new API. Developers will likely use this new image generation API immediately to build third-party integrations within their own applications, expanding the reach of Apple’s updated image models beyond native apps.

Why it matters

The updates suggest that the AI assistant wars are increasingly being fought at the operating system level — with your personal data as the differentiator.
