On Wednesday, Amazon-owned networking hardware company eero announced the launch of the eero Signal, a new hardware device designed to provide instant cellular backup during home internet outages. Priced at $99.99, the device serves as an instant backup when the primary internet connection goes down, provided the user has an active eero subscription. The hardware plugs directly into any compatible USB-C powered eero device that has Wi-Fi 6 or higher, ensuring that users with existing compatible eero hardware can easily integrate the backup system. When an outage occurs, the eero Signal automatically switches the local network to cellular connectivity, and then returns to standby mode once the primary service is restored. This automatic failover is designed to keep critical systems online, making it highly relevant for work-from-home employees, security systems, and users living in areas prone to frequent network disruptions.

To operate, the device requires an active subscription and utilizes a built-in multi-carrier eSIM. This technology allows the eero Signal to connect to the optimal cellular network available at the time of the outage, supporting major telecommunications carriers including AT&T and Verizon. Because the cellular network is only used intermittently during outages, the subscription costs less than most comparable 4G LTE plans. Both subscription tiers also offer discounted pricing when customers first purchase the hardware. At launch, customers can choose between two primary annual subscription options depending on their data needs:

  • eero Plus: Priced at $99.99 annually, this plan provides 10 GB of backup data.
  • eero Plus 100: Priced at $199.99 annually, this plan provides 100 GB of backup data.

While the initial launch of the eero Signal relies on 4G LTE connectivity, the company has outlined a clear roadmap for higher-speed options. Later this year, eero plans to launch a 5G version of the eero Signal, which will be priced at $199.99. Additionally, the company plans to expand support for the device to customers on eero Business plans later this year, extending the cellular failover capability to commercial and small-business environments that require constant uptime.

Why it matters

The eero Signal addresses the critical pain point of home internet reliability by offering a seamless, subscription-based cellular failover, with a roadmap to expand capacity and enterprise utility later this year.
