Amazon has begun rolling out a new user interface for its Fire TV streaming devices, representing the first major redesign for the platform in years. The update is initially available to Fire TV owners in the U.S., following a preview of the new design at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Amazon plans to roll out the update to more countries and devices this spring. This upcoming expansion will include streaming players and smart televisions, including those manufactured by partner brands such as Hisense, Insignia, Panasonic, and TCL. The updated design features rounded corners, varied gradients, consistent typography, and increased spacing between content.

The redesign shifts the platform toward a discovery hub—a system designed to help users find content across multiple services rather than simply acting as an app launcher. To simplify navigation, the update increases the home screen app pin limit from six to 20 slots, allowing users to pin more of their preferred streaming services. The interface also simplifies the top navigation bar into categories with simple icons, such as Movies, TV, Live TV, Sports, and News. Within these tabs, the system surfaces content the user is already watching alongside suggestions drawn from subscribed services. Less frequently used features, such as settings and the app store, are housed under a three-line “hamburger” navigation menu on the left side of the screen.

The update also integrates Alexa+, Amazon’s AI assistant, directly into the interface. This integration allows users to use natural language to search for content, ask follow-up questions, or interact with on-screen media. Users can refine their queries or ask follow-up questions as they chat with the assistant. The AI can also interact with on-screen content, enabling users to select a movie tile and ask for more information or search for films with a similar aesthetic. Amazon recently made Alexa+ available to customers with a Prime subscription as an included perk, while others can choose to pay for access separately.

Why it matters

The update represents the first major Fire TV redesign in years, aiming to shift the platform from a simple app launcher to a discovery hub amidst an explosion of streaming content.
