Altara raises $7M to bridge data gaps in physical sciences
Altara, a startup building an AI layer to bridge data gaps in physical sciences, has secured $7 million in seed funding led by Greylock.
San Francisco-based startup Altara has secured $7 million in seed funding to build an AI layer designed to bridge data gaps in physical sciences. The seed round was led by Greylock, with participation from Neo, BoxGroup, Liquid 2 Ventures, and Jeff Dean. Altara was founded in 2025 by Eva Tuecke and Catherine Yeo, who aim to bring fragmented technical information into a single platform.
According to Altara’s founders, the current state of physical science research and development involves a manual search across fragmented data sources. Co-founder Catherine Yeo, a founder of Altara, illustrated this challenge: “Imagine if you’re a company building next-generation batteries, and a battery fails during the cell testing in the R&D process,” she said. Yeo explained that a team of engineers must then manually review various data sources, including sensor logs, temperature and moisture data, and historical failure reports. This manual process of diagnosing and resolving failures can take scientists and engineers weeks or months. Altara claims its AI layer dramatically slashes the time required for this process, condensing weeks of manual data triaging into minutes.
Corinne Riley, a partner at Greylock, compared Altara’s approach to the role of site reliability engineers (SREs)—professionals focused on software system reliability. In the software world, when a system fails, an SRE reviews the company’s observability stack, which refers to the tools used to monitor and understand the state of a system. Riley noted that software outages are typically caused when someone pushes a change to the code. For comparison, the Greylock-backed company Resolve, which is valued at $1.5 billion, uses AI to diagnose software failures. Altara’s vision is to act as the hardware equivalent, determining exactly what went wrong when physical systems fail to perform.
While competitors like Periodic Labs and Radical AI are also active in the physical sciences space, Altara is taking a different, much less capital-intensive approach. Rather than trying to replace decades-old research and manufacturing firms, Altara provides an intelligence layer that plugs into their existing data. Greylock’s Riley views AI for physical science as the next big frontier and predicts an impending explosion of development in the sector.
