Alphabet plans $80 billion raise for AI infrastructure expansion

Google parent company Alphabet announced on Monday that it plans to raise $80 billion to help pay for its planned massive artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout. The company plans to raise this capital by selling stock, using the proceeds for general corporate purposes. These purposes include capital expenditures to scale its AI infrastructure and global compute. As a key part of this plan, Alphabet will sell $10 billion in stock to Berkshire Hathaway, the global holding company formerly led by Warren Buffett. This transaction with Berkshire Hathaway will help fund the capital expenditures required for Alphabet’s global compute expansion, while the remaining portion of the planned $80 billion raise will also be completed through stock sales.

The capital raise comes as Alphabet works to address demand that exceeds its available supply. In an official statement, the company noted that it is experiencing “strong demand for its AI solutions and services from enterprises and consumers, at levels that are exceeding the company’s available supply.” To resolve this supply-demand imbalance, Alphabet explained that by scaling its investments, the company seeks to expand its foundational infrastructure to support the significant growth opportunity ahead. The company added that the stock sale represents a way to fund its investments in a balanced way while retaining a healthy balance sheet.

This capital raise aligns with a broader trend in spending on global compute and AI infrastructure. At Google I/O, the company’s annual developer conference, last month, Google CEO Sundar Pichai detailed the scale of these investments. These projections indicate that Google’s capital expenditures will contribute significantly to the overall global spending on AI infrastructure this year. The projected spending figures for this year include:

  • Between $180 billion and $190 billion: The capital expenditures Google expects to spend before the year is out, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai at Google I/O, the company’s annual developer conference, last month.
  • As much as $700 billion: The total amount tech giants are expected to spend this year on AI capital expenditures to build out global compute and AI infrastructure.

These projected figures highlight the scale of capital being deployed to build out global AI infrastructure.
