Plaud and the rise of physical AI notetakers
Physical AI notetakers are emerging as versatile alternatives to digital-only meeting transcription tools, offering dedicated hardware for in-person recording.
Digital meeting notetakers help record and transcribe online meetings. However, physical notetakers are preferred by many for in-person or more versatile options. These dedicated hardware devices transcribe audio and use artificial intelligence to generate summaries and action items, serving as an alternative to software-only solutions.
The market features a variety of form factors, including credit-card-sized devices, wearable pins, pendants, and earbuds, with manufacturers competing on pricing, subscription models, and technical specifications:
- Plaud Note and Note Pro: Available since 2023, the Plaud Note is priced at $159, while the Plaud Note Pro costs $179. The Note Pro records audio within three to five meters. Both models include 300 minutes of free transcription per month.
- Plaud NotePin and NotePin S: These wearable versions are priced at $159 and $179, respectively. Both devices can record around 20 hours of continuous audio on a single charge.
- Mobvoi TicNote: Priced at $159, this device provides 25 hours of continuous recording. Mobvoi claims the TicNote shows real-time transcription and translation with support for more than 120 languages, and includes 600 free transcription minutes.
- Comulytic Note Pro: Priced at $159, Comulytic claims this device does not require any additional subscription for basic transcription. It records up to 45 hours of continuous audio on a single charge and has more than 100 days of standby time. An advanced plan is available for $15 per month or $119 per year.
- Omi Pendant: Priced at $89, this device has no onboard memory and must connect to a phone. It provides 10 to 14 hours of battery life.
- Viaim RecDot: These earbuds are priced at $200. Viaim claims they can transcribe audio in up to 78 languages.
- Anker Soundcore Work: This pin is priced at $159. Anker claims the device has a five-meter recording range. It records for eight hours, or up to 32 hours with its case, and includes 300 minutes of free transcription per month.
- Pocket: Priced at $199, this device weighs 52 grams, has 64GB of on-device memory, and offers up to four days of battery life. It features a recording range of 15 meters and supports over 120 languages. A monthly subscription costs $19.99 per month.
Hardware manufacturers are differentiating their products through distinct software features and pricing structures. While some brands require recurring fees for advanced features, others compete on hardware capabilities. For instance, Mobvoi claims its device supports real-time translation across more than 120 languages, while Comulytic claims its device requires no subscription for basic transcription. Meanwhile, physical recording ranges vary significantly, with Anker claiming a five-meter range compared to Pocket’s 15 meters.
